Discovering Serenity in Victoria Tower Gardens
3 Jun 2026
A bit of a gear shift in this week's blog. I am going to talk about a place which I have often found calms me down! As with many of the places I love, it will work its way into my stories. It is the place where Aldwyn Haynes meets Seward Atley in Blood in the Water before being shot. It won't be the last time this place is referenced either. My experience is much nicer than that of Aldwyn, however.
Nestled beside the iconic Houses of Parliament, Victoria Tower Gardens is a hidden gem that often escapes the notice of hurried tourists and busy Londoners. However, for those who take the time to wander through its lush pathways, it offers a unique blend of tranquility and history, making it an exceptional place to escape from the frenetic pace of city life. For me personally it was a place I discovered whilst on work experience when I was 17 and have frequented regularly ever since.
A Glimpse into History
The gardens were established in the 19th century and have been an integral part of the landscape since 1860 when they were opened to the public. Designed by the renowned landscape architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, the gardens house not only an array of beautiful greenery but also several memorials that pay homage to notable figures and events in British history. One notable site is the iconic statue of Emmeline Pankhurst, a key figure in the women's suffrage movement. Each memorial whispers tales of the passion and perseverance that have shaped our society.
This space has been a witness to historical moments: from the debates in the Houses of Parliament to the peaceful protests that have unfolded in its shadow. The gardens encapsulate a sense of continuity amidst the ever-evolving city around it.
A Writer’s Retreat
For me, the magic of Victoria Tower Gardens lies not just in its history but in its ability to foster creativity. It’s one of my favourite spots to escape and write; the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant sounds of buzzing city life create a perfect backdrop for my thoughts to flow. With my notebook in hand, I often find myself lost in the beauty of my surroundings, weaving the inspiration of this tranquil spot into my narrative. Looking across the river at the slowly turning London Eye to my left and the distant SIS building to my right, it is easy to get lost in the view and for the time to fly by.
There’s something uniquely soothing about being surrounded by nature while also being in the heart of the city and is a reminder that peace can always be found. Whether I’m drafting a chapter or brainstorming ideas, the gardens provide that much-needed refuge. It’s a place to reflect, to breathe, and to create.
A Call to Discover
If you ever find yourself in London, I wholeheartedly recommend taking a leisurely stroll through Victoria Tower Gardens. Pack a small picnic, bring along a good book (perhaps Blood in the Water 😉), or simply sit on a bench and take in the beauty around you. This serene escape is often overlooked, but it carries with it an atmosphere that invites both contemplation and inspiration.
In a world that's constantly pushing us to rush, Victoria Tower Gardens is a gentle reminder to pause, appreciate, and find peace amidst the chaos. Discover your own moments of clarity and creativity here. You might just find the perfect backdrop for your next great idea!!
