Masters in the craft who have inspired me

As a writer, I often find myself reflecting on the literary giants who have shaped my journey. Among them, George R.R. Martin stands tall as a beacon of imagination and skill. His epic series, A Song of Ice and Fire, isn’t just a collection of novels; it is a profound masterclass in storytelling that has significantly impacted my writing career. Please do not mistake my admiration for comparison, however, as I can only aspire to his world building and descriptive genius.

From the moment I cracked open the pages of A Game of Thrones, I was immersed in a world that was rich, complex, and hauntingly beautiful. His ability to create intricate characters, weave layered plots, and build an entire realm filled with its own history is nothing short of a literary masterpiece. He doesn’t just tell a story; he invites readers into a living, breathing world where every choice has consequences, and every character, and their motivations, are meticulously crafted.

One of the most striking skills displayed by George (or should I say Mr Martin?) is his nuanced character development. Characters in his series are rarely black and white; they exist in shades of grey that reflect the moral complexities of our own world and every generation which has preceded our own. This has inspired me to delve deeper into the psyches of my characters, making them more relatable and vivid to my readers. I’ve learned that no-one is purely good or evil, and that embracing these complexities can lead to richer storytelling. I will be discussing the world of Tolkien in a future post and I am deferential to the great man who gave birth to the modern fantasy epics, but for me George's exploration of the human psyche is unparalelled.

Moreover, George's world-building is a lesson in itself, even if some might argue it is perhaps too rich in granular detail. The Seven Kingdoms and the Free Cities of Essos are not just a backdrop for the story; they are integral to the plot and the characters’ arcs. Each region, culture, and history contributes to the stakes of the tale with their own machinations and ambitions which drive them.

This aspect has encouraged me to create worlds that feel authentic and multi-dimensional, allowing my readers to fully engage with the narrative. Although my first series of novels will be set in the modern world, I have long term ambitions to write in the fantasy space too. This desire is driven by the inspiration writers like George have stirred within me.

What stands out most perhaps is George's willingness to subvert expectations. He has a remarkable talent for leading readers down one path only to surprise them with an unexpected twist that reshapes their understanding of the story. This unpredictability keeps readers on the edge of their seats and compels them to turn the page. For those who have seen the infamous Red Wedding episode in the TV series, the clues are there in plain sight throughout a Storm of Swords and yet when you read the book for the first time, you never see it coming. It hits you right in the gut, the same as it does the character in the story. That is a level of artistry few can achive. I strive to incorporate this same sense of surprise in my writing, steering clear of predictable tropes and instead providing fresh, innovative narratives, but I can only dream of the level of skill George exhibits within his novels.

Furthermore, the themes of power, betrayal, honour, and sacrifice resonate deeply throughout the series. George explores the human condition and the darker aspects of ambition and morality. Through his work, I’ve been reminded of the importance of exploring profound themes in writing, elements that provoke thought and discussion long after the final page has been turned.

In conclusion, George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire is not just a saga but a fundamental source of inspiration for anyone passionate about storytelling. His remarkable skillset has had a profound effect on my writing career, pushing me to aspire for a depth and intricacy that I previously believed was unattainable. It is a literary masterpiece that continues to inspire countless authors, including myself, to write more fearlessly and creatively. As I continue on my path, I carry with me the lessons learned from Martin’s work, eager to explore the uncharted territories of my own imagination.

What about you? Has Martin's work influenced your writing journey as well?
