Expanding Horizons: The Journey of My Second Book

Expanding Horizons: The Journey of My Second Book

5 Nov 2025

As an author, each book feels like discovering a new world. My first book was primarily rooted in the UK, capturing the essence and vibrancy of this incredible country. However, with the publication of my second book, I’ve broadened my scope to encompass a wider range of settings and themes. The ramifications of the story I began in my first book ripple out into new territories, specifically, the Middle East. This expansion not only adds depth to my narrative but also presents a host of unique challenges and fascinating opportunities.

Delving into the history and cultures of my new locations posed an exciting writing dilemma. While I would have relished the opportunity to visit each site firsthand, practical limitations meant that I had to rely on intensive research instead. Let me tell you, the research process was nothing short of riveting. I delved into ancient histories, explored contemporary issues, and uncovered the rich tapestry of life in the Middle East. Each finding added layers to my characters and plot, making the story more compelling and authentic.

One of the critical aspects of the Middle Eastern settings in my book is how they interact with the themes introduced in my first work. The characters have evolved, now navigating complexities that extend beyond London’s borders, encountering diverse cultures, challenges, and perspectives. This diversification has not only enriched their journeys but also provided me with a platform to explore broader concepts of identity, belonging, and the far-reaching consequences of our actions.

While I may not have been able to physically step onto the sands of the Middle East, I made sure to immerse myself in its literature, art, and history. Visiting libraries, curating articles, and even connecting with locals online gave me invaluable insights. The stories of individuals from this region are woven into the fabric of my narrative, allowing readers to experience a sense of place and understanding that transcends geographical boundaries. This will continue over the next few books with an intrinsic connection between the narrative and the Middle East. Of course, we still have the mystery of Ben's time in Tehran to tell in Book 3!

Throughout this writing journey, I've found that broadening the scope of my narrative pushes me as a writer. It compels me to think critically about how culture shapes our experiences and to approach sensitive topics with the respect and nuance they deserve. It challenges me to strike a balance between authenticity and creativity.

I’m excited to share more about this journey and the lessons learned along the way. As I put the finishing touches on my second book, I hope readers will resonate with the stories of the people and places that I have come to love through my research. Through their journeys, I aspire to provide a deeper appreciation for the complexities of our world. It is, after all, a small globe with vast interconnected stories waiting to be told.
